Part of a proud tradition of Depression Era crops, the Mortgage Lifter tomato seed often refers not to one specific type, but many varieties that were grown by hard-pressed farmers trying to recover from the market crash of 1929. This particular cultivar was grown by farmer M.C. Byles of Logan, West Virginia whom famously paid off his mortgage with the tomato.
